Foster Care

Houston Strong licenses families to provide foster care services for up to six children in their primary home. Families have the option after six months to adopt. The foster care system in Texas is designed to provide temporary care for children who are unable to live with their parents or guardians due to neglect, abuse, or other family problems.

Here is a general overview of how foster care works in Texas:

  1.  Becoming a Houston Strong Foster Parent: Individuals or families who wish to become foster parents in Texas must go through a screening process that includes background checks, home visits, and free educational training classes. This process could take from 90-180 days. Once approved, foster parents are matched with children who need placement.
  2.  Placement: Children are placed in foster homes based on their age, gender, and special needs. The goal of placement is to provide a safe and stable environment for the child. As an agency, we aim to keep siblings together and maintain lifelong family connections. We also excel as an agency in keeping stable placements and not disrupting children’s placements.
  3.  Services for Foster Children: Foster children in Texas receive medical care, education, and counseling services while in care. Houston Strong works with foster parents and other providers to ensure that the needs of the child are met as a Clinical team.
  4.  Visitation & Reunification: Whenever possible, we work to reunify children with their families. This process includes visitation between the child and their family members. Family reunification includes placing kids back in the home with their biological families.
  5.  Permanency: Houston Strong works closely with the Department of Family and Protective Services to ensure that children in foster care are placed in permanent homes as quickly as possible. When family reunification is not possible, we work to find permanent placements for the child such as adoption, kinship placements, or Preparation for Adult Living.
