Adoption

Houston Strong offers Foster to Adopt and Straight Adoption Services through the Department of Family and Protective Services by facilitating adoptions for children in Child Protective Services care who are unable to return to their birth families.

If you are interested in Adopting or Fostering to Adopt the first step is to attend an information meeting called New Family Orientation. These meetings are held every 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month and provide an overview of the process, and eligibility requirements, and discuss the types of children available for adoption.

After attending New Family Orientation, you will need to complete an application and undergo a Home Study. The Home Study is a comprehensive evaluation of your home and family to determine your suitability as adoptive parents. The process includes background checks, interviews, and a review of your finances and lifestyle.

Once you have completed the home study and been approved, DFPS will work with you to find a child’s background, medical history, and any special needs they may have. If you decide to move forward with the adoption, you will need to attend court hearings and complete the necessary paperwork. Houston Strong will assist you with getting an attorney and providing guidance and support throughout the process including post-adoption services to ensure the child’s successful transition into your family.

Adopting DFPS can be a long and involved process, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. You will be giving a child who has experienced abuse, neglect, or trauma a new chance at a happy and healthy life.
